The OG stands for “Original”—because this is the first seed blend ever specifically developed to perform under true frost seeding conditions. While many seed blends are designed for spring or fall planting, they often include varieties that aren’t well suited for the freeze-thaw cycles of late winter and early spring.
At Magnet Outdoors, we believe every seed should work for the conditions you're planting in. That’s why every component of the OG Frost Seed Blend has been carefully selected and tested to ensure it performs when broadcast over frozen ground. As the soil freezes and thaws, seeds settle into surface cracks and remain dormant until early spring moisture kicks off germination.
If you’re frost seeding, give your plot the best chance to thrive with the OG Frost Seed Blend—the original, purpose-built mix made to deliver results when it matters most.
Planting Guide & Instructions
FROST SEEDING INSTRUCTIONS
Frost seeding uses the natural freeze–thaw cycle to work seed into the soil without tilling. As the ground thaws during the day and refreezes at night, small cracks form that pull the seed into the soil for excellent seed-to-soil contact.
WHEN TO FROST SEED
Late winter to early spring, when nights are still freezing but days are warming. Ground should be bare or have only short, dead vegetation.
STEP-BY-STEP
- Spread the Seed - Broadcast over frozen ground at the recommended seeding rates. Tip: Light snow cover is fine—it will melt and help carry seed to the soil. Deep snow will delay the process.
- Let the Weather Work - The freeze–thaw cycle will naturally pull the seed into the soil—no extra covering needed.
- After Seeding - Avoid disturbing the plot until seedlings are well established. Monitor for weeds and manage as needed.
RECOMMENDED SEEDING RATES
Existing Perennial Plot: 3 lbs Per 1⁄2 Acre
Rotating from an Annual to a Perennial: 4.5 lbs per 1⁄2 acre
